Graduate Program in Urban Planning, University of Kansas
Position Announcement for an Assistant or Associate Professor

Assistant or Associate Professor - Tenure Track Position. The Graduate Program in Urban Planning at the University of Kansas invites applications from qualified persons for appointment at the assistant professor level, although applications for associate professor will be considered. The appointment will be effective August, 2008.

Candidates are sought with expertise in transportation planning and/or environmental planning. Candidates will also be considered who have expertise that would contribute to the program’s other areas of concentrations. These concentrations include: Housing and Development Planning; Land Use and Urban Design Planning; as well as Transportation Planning; and Environmental Planning. Candidates should be capable of teaching one or more core courses and contributing to one or more areas within the program's concentrations.

A Ph.D. in urban planning or a related field is required.  Candidates may apply who have not completed their Ph.D. degree but anticipate doing so very soon after the start date at the University of Kansas.  Professional experience is highly desirable.

The Urban Planning Program offers a Master of Urban Planning degree. The program typically has 50 students enrolled in the two-year program.  There is a full-time faculty of five, supported by several adjunct professors and instructors.

With an enrollment of 27,000 students, The University of Kansas is in Lawrence, a community of 85,000.  Lawrence is located 50 minutes west of downtown Kansas City.  It ranks at the top among the nation’s communities in terms of:

  • Ability to manage growth, maintain vibrant downtowns, and preserve historic sites (National Trust for Historic Preservation),
